Phone Scam from Microsoft?

For two days now I have gotten phone calls from “Private Number” ad each time they were from a Microsoft support group. Yesterday I played with them for a little bit.
The guy that could barely speak English and was obviously sitting in a call center. He told me he was calling about a problem with my windows computer, so I asked him which computer…after stuttering for a bit he responded that it was my windows computer, once again I asked which windows computer, what version. Stuttering again “XP“, I then asked him what the IP was, or the registry number…more stuttering as he tells me my computer is sending them error codes. I asked which codes, and now he changes it to be that my computer has downloaded spam and malware from a compromised site, so once again I ask him what site, can I have the IP?….and it just continued with this guy trying to read his script and doing what minor improvisations he can…he wasn’t even good at them, he apparently knew nothing about computers.

Today they called me again and I decided to play some more, this time it was 45 minutes and I wrote down the whole conversation while I was talking to him.

Him: I am calling from Microsoft Program Support. We are calling about a problem with your computer”

Me: Okay, which computer?

Him: Your Microsoft Windows Computer?

Me: Once again, which one?
Him: (a brief pause) the laptop

Me: Okay, that narrows it down a little, which laptop?

Him: The one with Windows 7

Me: Okay, what is the issue? (Note: We don’t own a Windows 7 laptop)

Him: We are getting a series of error codes, it seems that your system has a virus
Me: Are you getting the I-D-10-T error?

Him: We are getting a lot of different codes, that is one of them
Me: When I was dealing with Microsoft last week it was because of an ID10T code

Him: (A brief pause) Well, we aren’t actually with Microsoft, we work with them as an authorized support agent, I am with ** ********* (A legitimate company based in Virginia. I have let them know they are being used) and we are attempting to help you with your computer virus
Me: Which virus?

Him: it’s a trojan

Me: which one?

Him: uhmm, crf.exe

Me: okay, so what do you want me to do?( I know that CRF is an extension, not a virus name)

Him: Do you see the Windows button on your Windows PC?.
Me: Yes.
Him: Click on it and the R button at the same time. What do you see?
Me: The run box.
Him: Very good, sir. Now enter EVENTVWR and click OK.
ME: Ok (I didn’t bother because I know what the event viewer is)
Him What do you see?
Me: messages
Him: How many?
Me: A lot
Him: That is because of the virus in your system. Now I’m going to tell you how to download our software so I can help you clean your computer and it will work better.
Me: Okay, but doesn’t my antivirus and spam blocker do that?

Him: Somethings bypass those. Go Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Me: Ok.
Him: You have opened Microsoft Internet Explorer?
Me: Yes.
Him: Very good, now go to www.*********.com. What do you see?

A this point, I didn’t bother typing the website because I didn’t want to give them traffic and it might have had something nasty. I told him that I was very familiar with computer and computer codes and that I had in fact been in a teleconference two days ago with Bing programmers(which I had). He then still tried to get me to download some program that would help my computer and probably take my money.

I still can’t believe that the ID10T error didn’t even phase him.

Wow! Typo city and my rant

After looking over a few of my past posts I realized that I really need to proofread them before I hit the publish button. I usually glance them over, but I don’t give them the same critique that I do to paid articles and I can tell. I am very sorry for subjecting you to my clumsy fingers and lazy reading skills.

Now on to today’s minor rant.

SCHEMA -noun, plural sche·ma·ta [skee-muh-tuh or, sometimes, skee-mah-tuh, ski-] Show IPA , sche·mas.

1.a diagram, plan, or scheme. Synonyms: outline, framework, model.
2.an underlying organizational pattern or structure; conceptual framework: A schema provides the basis by which someone relates to the events he or she experiences.
3.(in Kantian epistemology) a concept, similar to a universal but limited to phenomenal knowledge, by which an object of knowledge or an idea of pure reason may be apprehended.
My son is in Kindergarten and he came home with this today:
schemaMost adults don’t know what schema means and even those that do know it will NEVER use the word. Why is 5-year-old learning a word that they won’t comprehend the meaning of, be able to pronounce correctly, or even spell?

When I asked my son what it meant he said “It’s something I do really good” WRONG – see above meaning.
Is this what they are teaching are children? Why don’t they teach them routine, plan, diagram, even sequence of events…teaching them schema is like trying to teach them how to write C++, it’s beyond their comprehension.

Summer is over

School is progressing pretty much as I expected.

My son can’t sit still or be quiet so he’s getting in trouble. It’s also gone to a 50% chance that I will have trouble with him in the morning because he’s moving slow or being lazy. Other than that, he actually enjoys school once he is there.

I picked up a nice little job for a HVAC company. I enjoy writing about something that isn’t drug or tech related, it gives me a change up. I also have the benefit that I know what I am writing about so when it comes to terminology I’m right there with it.

Other than that, there isn’t a lot going on. I have a pretty boring life once summer is over. No more ren faire, all the comic conventions are over and I can’t do any more car shows.  This weekend I have a dinner party to go to that is Australian themed, should be interesting. I’m trying to come up with some side dishes and everything is what I consider British, so I may just cave in and cook what I know.

Well off to do some writing.

Car Shows, Vacation and More

Well, once again I have fallen way behind on blogs and I am trying to make a point to catch them all back up. I think this will be much easier once winter rolls in because there is way too much to do in the summer. All summer I have the Bristol Renaissance Faire, Car Shows, and yard work. Not to mention the continual battle with the rabbits and the various things I need to do around the house or with my son. I always seem to run out of time.

Took Bernice, my 1940 Oldsmobile (all original) to one of the local car shows and got third place. Unfortunately I missed the big car show I normally put her in because we were on vacation, it’s nice to see that even if she isn’t the prettiest or flashiest at the show that she definitely has admirers.

Things have been hectic since my last post, I haven’t even had a chance to read or respond to any of my normal blogs. I’ve had a lot of writing to do lately, most of it ghost writing so I can’t even lay claim to it, but it pays the bills.

For a mother’s day/birthday gift my hubby bought me the front end assembly for my Oldsmobile, so once that shows up I’ll be spending a lot of time of underneath her replacing 70-year-old joints (if only it was that easy for the rest of us). Once done it will be a lot safer to take her to the car shows and I won’t have to worry about breaking something every time I hit a bump.

This is going to be my last free weekend for the next several months. The only thing I have planned is some yard work from here out I have every weekend booked, and some of them are double booked. It’s going to be a busy summer.

Not much else to say so I’m just going to sign off. Have a good one.

Time

Time just seems to constantly escape. I am always putting this blog on hold because I have something else I need to do. I’m always thinking that I will get back to it later. The next thing I know it’s almost a month since I posted on here.

It has been a busy month. I’ve been working out a lot and getting into shape, I’ve been preparing my seedlings, getting ready for C2E2 and of course writing. All of this while trying to do all the normal family things like play shuttle for my son to karate and baseball, play counselor to my husband, and financial adviser to my stepson. It’s a busy life.

I went to a lecture by Max Brooks, author of Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z. That was fun. I love how he admits that his book is based on an actual survival guide. It amazes me how many people did not realize that. It’s a basic survival guide with a small twist. Zombies just makes it more interesting.

Madame Masque and Doctor Midnight – Steampunk Style

I went to C2E2 on Friday we were steam punk Madame Masque and Doctor Midnight, then Saturday I just grabbed my ren faire armor because it was easy and got to meet the one and only Julie Newmar. The poor woman was exhausted so I kept it brief and told her that I was a big fan of her rose garden and would love to see some more posted about that and after looking at her Facebook page it appears that she has.

A Generation of Automatons

Entire generations grew up playing cowboys and indians, cops and robbers, or superheros and villains. What percentage of us are mass murders? Are we twisted and cruel? No, we learned respect for authority, we created role models to live up to.

How many of us grew up seeing Greek statues and French artwork in our textbooks? Yeah we giggled because they were naked or fat. We were children, that is what children do. Did that make us perverts? No, it just taught us to appreciate another’s perspective of beauty.

I can kill someone with a pen, a stone or even my bare hands. I could create a bomb from ‘harmless’ cleaning supplies. So are they going to protect us from writing or the earth itself? Do we all need to wear mittens so we can’t choke the life out of someone?

They still teach Shakespeare in school, has anyone actually ‘looked’ at the meanings behind some of it, not all of his writings are clean and wholesome, in fact very little of it is. Even in music, a lot of todays music is cleaner than it was 20 years ago, or even 50. Actually read some of the lyrics from Conway Twittywhere do you think some of your favorite bands got their names?

The only things that have been truly banned from schools in North America are common sense, free will and real education. If you teach common sense and allow free will then the rest will follow.

North America is churning out a nation of automatons. I am raising a free thinker, and I encourage him to keep his creativity and free will, if that means he gets in trouble at school then so be it…I will fight tooth and nail to give him true opportunity and to allow him to stand out from the crowd of mindless drones that are being created.

As for the whole bullying B.S. That seems to be one of the soapboxes right now, I’m not going any further than to say, teach the bullied to hit back, let them retaliate. Enough pussy footing around things.

Sorry for the rant, I’ve just seen too much lately and had to voice my opinions.
