And now it’s my turn to select a couple of nominees

Blog of the Year

I might be a little slow, but now I get to choose nominees for  the 2012 Blog Of the Year Award.

I’ll be honest, there aren’t many I actually read, there are a few blogs I subscribe to and a lot that I casually look at. The ones that get and hold my attention are the ones I will nominate.

#1  Homepreneurs’s

A blog I read almost continuously as he always has new and interesting ideas and suggestions on various work at home jobs and business growth. A well laid out blog that I enjoy

#2  Terriblywrite

Always good for a chuckle or a groan as they bring to light the numerous spelling and grammar errors in the public media. I’m just grateful that I don’t fall under their radar.

#3 BlurtBlog

Sometimes Humorous, sometimes just sage words of advice. This blog is always an entertaining read as the author blurts about everything.

And now for the rules:

The ‘rules’ for this award are simple:

1 Select the blog(s) you think deserve the ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award

2 Write a blog post and tell us about the blog(s) you have chosen – there’s no minimum or maximum number of blogs required – and ‘present’ them with their award.

3 Please include a link back to this page ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award – http://thethoughtpalette.co.uk/our-awards/blog-of-the-year-2012-award/   and include these ‘rules’ in your post (please don’t alter the rules or the badges!)

4 Let the blog(s) you have chosen know that you have given them this award and share the ‘rules’ with them

5 You can now also join our Facebook group – click ‘like’ on this page ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award Facebook group and then you can share your blog with an even wider audience

6 As a winner of the award – please add a link back to the blog that presented you with the award – and then proudly display the award on your blog and sidebar … and start collecting stars…

I’m flattered

I was recently asked by a fellow blogger if they could interview me, of course I agreed. I don’t see the appeal but I am greatly flattered.

I’ve been plodding along here writing but I haven’t done anything spectacular. I haven’t rescued any children from burning buildings or made any grand donations to medical science. I am just me, April Carvelli, trying to see how well I can survive in the digital world. I am in a totally different field after almost 20 years dealing with field service and water/wastewater treatment.

I filled out his questionnaire and returned it to him, so I guess I will shortly be featured on Homepreneurs, which is very cool. In the meantime go and check out his site as there is some very cool information on there, he finds some of the best sites. Most recently a Free website creator, which he wrote about in his blog.

Happy New Year!

…at least I hope it turns out to be a happier year than the last. To be honest the last year sucked and I don’t think this one is getting any better.

Well seeing as it is tradition I guess I should lay out a few resolutions and try not to break them;

  1. everyone favorite resolution – Lose weight/get in shape
  2. Get a job or make writing work for me
  3. Stop Procrastinating  on almost everything
  4. Maintain your blogs on a weekly or semi-weekly basis
  5. Don’t kill anyone

Lets see how successful I am

Another day, another dollar…

..well not exactly.

Just more job hunting, my customers have slowed down considerably. I have a few jobs to ghostwrite, one blog, and some video editing, but not enough to pay the bills.

The last few weeks have been spent trying to teach myself how to design a WordPress website and I am quite impressed with myself. http://dracmor.com  is the website for a Scottish clan that my husband and I run. It is primarily based at the Bristol Wisconsin rennaisance faire.

We are not a hardcore clan, we are more a large group of friends with a tying interest. We are extremely diverse in careers, age, sex and race and just like to have fun. We are also a support network that attempts to help each other when there are problems, unfortunately more and more of us are having financial difficulties. So if you ever get out to the Bristol ren faire look for those of us with the black tartan (many simply have a pin of it with a loop of pearls) and say hi or ask them to direct you to Lady Dracmor or Kattosha.

The last time I had developed this page was almost ten years ago and then I wrote it in painstaking HTML, but it was a valuable lesson. This was much easier as I used a WordPress base and I love how adaptable it is and how many addons I can find out there for it. The site is not yet complete as I have plans to add a message board, marketplace, and blog to it. Once those pages are complete I will grant limited access to my members so they can post their own photos and sales information. There will also be two subsites eventually added; one will be for Pirates and the other for Steampunk.

If you get a chance pop over to dracmor.com and give me your opinions. I would love to hear how outsiders view this and see if you have any suggestions to add to it. Unfortunately being on the inside I may be missing some key points.

Time for some hardball

As stated earlier I have a non-paying client that I cannot get hold of, she owes me a lot of money and I don’t think I will see it.

There are only a few options I can pursue:

  1. Drop it all and forget the money, take it as a lesson learned
  2. Publish everything I sold her, despite the fact that her customers have published them. I have proof of when I wrote them
  3. Contact the websites where they are published and politely offer your services, after all if my customer is missing then they aren’t receiving blogs from her.

I chosen to go with option #3 for now. I just emailed one of the sites:

Hello:
I realize that you have been dealing with **** for your blog entries, I believe that she provided them to you on a monthly basis. I have not been able to contact her for quite a while now and I am uncertain if anyone has been covering her in her absence.
If she is not responsive to your requirements I would appreciate the opportunity to write your blogs, if even on a temporary basis.
I have several ghost writing projects I have done and a steady ghostwriting clientele including an engineering firm in Abu Dhabi, a wine enthusiast, a drug rehab facility, a dental facility and a ‘best of’ list.
I also have several published articles which can be found listed at http://killerteacup.wordpress.com/published-articles/. I am regular contributor to a used car blog http://carsugar.com/. My online portfolio of random writing can be found at http://killerteacup.wordpress.com/ and my personal blog can be found at https://ghostofawriter.wordpress.com/.
If you would like to discuss this further I can be reached via email at acarvelli@live.com
Sincerely:
April Carvelli
I’ve also given them links to all my blogs, so they will see this if they choose to look and will know that I am basically poaching, but I’m sort of poaching what I have already written. I am just skipping the middle man.

Writing my own blogs is tough

Writing my own blogs is getting exceedingly difficult, I have a million ideas a day that I sell but when it comes to my own I tend to be a big blank. The few ideas I have I write then I go and hawk them to someone else for money. My portfolio blog at http://killerteacup.wordpress.com/isn’t going to grow too much if I keep doing that, but I keep looking at the money end of things. I don’t want to be on unemployment forever.

I find I have no problem writing for someone else, but then again they normally give me a topic. Today I wrote several blogs on a variety of topics that were vastly different: Tattoos, stages of pregnancy, DogTV,  skateboarding, and two excel data sheets. Tomorrow has three articles due on SEO and one on Catastrophic computer failure. All of these, except DogTV and pregnancy are ghostwriting.  My big problem with some of these topics is keeping them within the required word limit. Some of these topics I could write on for days, I really need to restrict my writing and stop giving so many of my customers free work.

I guess I have written my limit for the day as I now have a four-year-old and a 120 lb dog laying at my feet begging to go outside and play. That means that my day is over and when I come back in it will be time to clean the kitchen and make dinner. I am off now to see what the neighborhood is doing.

Today is the day

Today is the day that I started marketing myself and my abilities. I received an offer to be an insurance salesman (I think we all get those) and I responded by telling them how I can improve their website with local news articles and daily blogs.  I posted an ad on craigslist.org to sell myself as a blog writer and I have written down a plan of attack. The severance package from my last job is running out and I don’t want to sit on unemployment so now if the time to truly act.  I have a portfolio of unpublished writings. I have one published blog I can lay claim to and several ghost blogs (unfortunately I can’t claim them). I also have the Engineering firm in Dubai I am ghosting for.

My main selling point will have to be my personal marketing, how I sell myself to prospective clients. I need to work on my sales pitch, but at least I have started it. Tomorrows task will be streamlining the resume so I can put it up here and start pushing my marketing.
