Time just seems to constantly escape. I am always putting this blog on hold because I have something else I need to do. I’m always thinking that I will get back to it later. The next thing I know it’s almost a month since I posted on here.
It has been a busy month. I’ve been working out a lot and getting into shape, I’ve been preparing my seedlings, getting ready for C2E2 and of course writing. All of this while trying to do all the normal family things like play shuttle for my son to karate and baseball, play counselor to my husband, and financial adviser to my stepson. It’s a busy life.
I went to a lecture by Max Brooks, author of Zombie Survival Guide and World War Z. That was fun. I love how he admits that his book is based on an actual survival guide. It amazes me how many people did not realize that. It’s a basic survival guide with a small twist. Zombies just makes it more interesting.
Madame Masque and Doctor Midnight – Steampunk Style
I went to C2E2 on Friday we were steam punk Madame Masque and Doctor Midnight, then Saturday I just grabbed my ren faire armor because it was easy and got to meet the one and only Julie Newmar. The poor woman was exhausted so I kept it brief and told her that I was a big fan of her rose garden and would love to see some more posted about that and after looking at her Facebook page it appears that she has.
..well not exactly.
Just more job hunting, my customers have slowed down considerably. I have a few jobs to ghostwrite, one blog, and some video editing, but not enough to pay the bills.
The last few weeks have been spent trying to teach myself how to design a WordPress website and I am quite impressed with myself. http://dracmor.com is the website for a Scottish clan that my husband and I run. It is primarily based at the Bristol Wisconsin rennaisance faire.
We are not a hardcore clan, we are more a large group of friends with a tying interest. We are extremely diverse in careers, age, sex and race and just like to have fun. We are also a support network that attempts to help each other when there are problems, unfortunately more and more of us are having financial difficulties. So if you ever get out to the Bristol ren faire look for those of us with the black tartan (many simply have a pin of it with a loop of pearls) and say hi or ask them to direct you to Lady Dracmor or Kattosha.
The last time I had developed this page was almost ten years ago and then I wrote it in painstaking HTML, but it was a valuable lesson. This was much easier as I used a WordPress base and I love how adaptable it is and how many addons I can find out there for it. The site is not yet complete as I have plans to add a message board, marketplace, and blog to it. Once those pages are complete I will grant limited access to my members so they can post their own photos and sales information. There will also be two subsites eventually added; one will be for Pirates and the other for Steampunk.
If you get a chance pop over to dracmor.com and give me your opinions. I would love to hear how outsiders view this and see if you have any suggestions to add to it. Unfortunately being on the inside I may be missing some key points.
A little off topic…again…
I don’t post pictures of myself often, but this time I will make an exception as I am quite proud of this outfit I put it together entirely on a last-minute whim. The skirt was in my closet, part of a previous pirate costume, the bodice had been purchased last year and was worn occasionally for various ren faire costumes, but what brought it together was that jacket that I found on Thursday at the Goodwill. That was a wonderful find.
My steampunk outfit for Steampunk day 2012 at the Bristol Renaissance Faire
The umbrella was also found at Goodwill, but when I found it was a normal large black umbrella, I spent part of Thursday and Friday ripping out panels and adding new ones to give it an appropriate parasol type look (and for someone who doesn’t sew, I was impressed). The hat was made by my husband out of an old alarm clock.
For those that don’t get it this was a steampunk outfit. Definition of Steampunk from Wikipedia;
Steampunk is a genre that originated during the 1980s and early 1990s and incorporates elements of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, horror, and speculative fiction. It involves a setting where steam power is widely used—whether in an alternate history such as Victorian era Britain or “Wild West“-era United States, or in a post-apocalyptic time —that incorporates elements of either science fiction or fantasy. Works of steampunk often feature anachronistictechnology, or futuristic innovations as Victorians might have envisioned them, based on a Victorian perspective on fashion, culture, architectural style, and art.
It was steampunk weekend at the Bristol Renassance Faire. For those of you interested in Steampunk then I suggest you check out the work of Highwind Steamworks, my friend Jeff and his wife Dawn make some excellent steampunk gear, you can also subscribe to their Facebook page.
